Aug. 24--A suspected carjacker who barricaded himself in a home in South Gate and fired on police has surrendered peacefully, authorities said.
Armed with a handgun, the man carjacked a driver Monday morning and abandoned the vehicle not far from his home in the 10600 block of Capistrano Avenue, said South Gate police Capt. Darren Arakawa.
Officers who found the car and were looking for the gunman were met with a "volley" of gunfire from the man's home, Arakawa said. No officers were injured in the shooting.
Police immediately closed down the neighborhood, called in the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department tactical team and sent a crisis negotiator to try to talk to the man to bring about a peaceful ending, Arakawa said.
More than a dozen homes in the area were evacuated and residents were being guided to an auditorium at a park at 4900 Southern Ave., Arakawa said.
City officials announced that the man had surrendered and residents would be allowed to return to their homes about 4 p.m.
