BRIEF: City workers wind up in trench dodging vehicle being pursued by cops

Jan. 30--Two city workers fell into a trench after a car fleeing police sped past them on the Far South Side early Friday, authorities said.

The two Water Department workers were replacing a water main valve around 12:40 a.m. in the 1500 block of East 95th Street when they fell into a 10-foot hole, according to police and fire officials.

The workers were apparently trying to get out of the way of the fleeing car when they fell, according to Police News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines.

The car was possibly stolen, Gaines said.

The workers, a man and a woman, were rescued and taken to Advocate Trinity Hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, police and fire officials said.

No one was in custody, Gaines said.
