BRIEF: Car crashes into Southwest Side day care center, injuring a child

April 01--An 18-month-old was taken to a hospital after a car crashed into a day care center containing 27 other children Friday morning on the Southwest Side, police said.

The 18-month-old was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn as a precaution, to be checked, said Officer Nicole Trainor, a Chicago police spokeswoman.

The child's condition has stabilized at Christ, according to Chicago Fire Department Chief Juan Hernandez.

"The other 27 children are safe," Hernandez said, adding that they were in an area of the Teddy Bear Day Care, 3473 W. Columbus Ave., that was not affected by the crash. Those children were not injured and not taken to any hospitals, Hernandez said.

A car crashed into the building just before 9 a.m. in the 3400 block of West Columbus Avenue, in the Ashburn neighborhood, Trainor said.

The male driver of the car also declined to be taken to a hospital, Hernandez said.
