BRIEF: Calaveras County teen fakes abduction, officials say; prompts Amber Alert

Nov. 18--A 14-year-old Northern California boy faked his own abduction, authorities said, resulting in a statewide Amber Alert on Monday night.

Calaveras County sheriff's officials said the teen was found in Stockton after making up an elaborate kidnapping story.

The high school freshman claimed that two men forced him into a white van about 10:30 a.m. outside a gas station convenience store in San Andreas.

An Amber Alert was issued Monday afternoon after the teen's family reported him missing. Then at about 6:20 p.m., Stockton police found him.

Authorities said they had evidence showing that he made up the story.

He was taken into custody and turned over to the county's Juvenile Probation Department.

Sheriff's officials said "extensive deployment of resources" were used during the investigation into his kidnapping story.
