BRIEF: Caged bird, 35 bullet casings left in cemetery after funeral

Nov. 26--Elmhurst police found an abandoned bird in a cage Monday when responding to shots fired in a local cemetery.

Police responded to a report of gun shots at Mount Emblem Cemetery, 520 E. Grand Avenue, about 1:30 p.m. Monday and found 35 empty bullet casings, a baseball cap, empty beer cans and a little white bird in a cage.

Deputy Police Chief Jim Kveton said cemetery employees told police that a funeral service had been taking place at the cemetery. He said the people who had been attending the service apparently scattered and left behind the little white bird in a cage.

Kveton said he did not know if or how the bird was involved in the funeral service.

"It may be that the person who died liked birds," Kveton said.

He said the bird was taken to a local animal shelter.
