BRIEF: Bulls' Doug McDermott out 6 to 8 weeks after knee surgery

Dec. 14--Doug McDermott is facing six to eight weeks of rehabilitation after Bulls team physician Brian Cole repaired a small meniscus tear in the first-round pick's right knee Saturday.

The Bulls didn't release any official timetable for McDermott's return, and the rehab estimate is fluid based on how quickly McDermott can regain strength and conditioning. McDermott's agent, Mark Bartelstein, said the surgery went well and that there are no long-term concerns.

McDermott actually left the procedure without crutches.

McDermott never missed action while playing all 145 games over four seasons at Creighton and first experienced soreness Dec. 2. The Bulls placed him on a rehab program that eased concern enough that McDermott practiced fully Dec. 5 and participated in the Dec. 6 morning shootaround preceding the Warriors game.

But McDermott experienced some swelling after those sessions. At some point, the small tear was discovered and the decision for arthroscopic surgery was made.

"It's very random," McDermott said on the day of the initial soreness. "Just wear and tear over time."

McDermott, whom the Bulls acquired on draft night in a trade with the Nuggets, had played sparingly before the injury.
