Nov. 03--Two brothers could be sentenced to 15 years to life in state prison after they were convicted Friday of killing an 18-year-old man at Cleveland High School in Reseda.
Anthony Carpio, 18, and Michael Steven Carpio, 20, were found guilty of second-degree murder in the death of Kevin Orellana, said Los Angeles County Deputy Dist. Atty. Scott Marcus.
The death occurred after the brothers, who authorities say are members of the Rockwood street gang, approached Orellana as he played handball on campus after school and challenged him as a possible gang rival. Witnesses said that during the fight, Anthony Carpio stabbed Orellana. The brothers then ran into a getaway vehicle driven by Michelle Pineda, 20, prosecutors said.
Los Angeles police investigators used social-media accounts of the attack to help piece together the events.
Pineda pleaded no contest on Oct. 20 to accessory after the fact with knowledge of the crime. Prosecutors say she will be sentenced on Nov. 4 to two years in state prison to be served in local custody.
The brothers each face a maximum of 15 years to life in state prison. Their sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 9.
