BRIEF: Brawl breaks out at playoff game between North Lawndale, Marshall

March 12--A brawl broke out Wednesday night after a boys basketball sectional playoff game at Westinghouse College Prep High School on the West Side, authorities said.

After North Lawndale defeated Marshall 70-62, words were exchanged in the postgame handshake line, which led to a fight involving the rival schools' players and fans.

Illinois High School Association spokesman Matt Troha said the IHSA was aware of the incident. He said the IHSA expects to interview all involved parties on Thursday and hopes to view a video of the fight before deciding what actions to take.

Chicago police were called to the school in the 3200 block of West Franklin Boulevard about 8:45 p.m. Wednesday, according to Officer Ron Gaines, a police spokesman.

Police took one girl, whose age was not provided, into custody, Gaines said. The girl was later released to her parents.

With its victory, North Lawndale advanced to the Class 3A Westinghouse Sectional final, where the Phoenix are scheduled to play St. Joseph at 7 p.m. Friday.
