2 wounded in South Side shootings

Dec. 31--A 15-year-old boy and a 20-year-old man were wounded in separate shootings Tuesday on the South Side in the city's Chatham and Brainerd neighborhoods.

The latest shooting happened about 8:15 p.m. on the 7500 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue in the Chatham neighborhood, said Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Thomas Sweeney.

A 20-year-old man and a friend were riding in a vehicle when a dark-colored SUV pulled up alongside the vehicle, police said. Someone in the SUV opened fire and shot the 20-year-old man, who was in the passenger seat, in the leg.

The man was taken to Jackson Park Hospital and Medical Center where his condition was stabilized, police said.

Earlier Tuesday, a 15-year-old was shot in the Brainerd neighborhood shortly before 3 p.m. in the 9000 block of South Ada Street, said Sweeney.

The boy was walking when a gunman approached on foot and started shooting, police said. The 15-year-old boy fled the scene and later felt pain. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where he was treated for a gunshot wound to the back.

Police did not provide a condition on the boy but said he had been stabilized.

No one was in custody for either shootings as of Tuesday evening, and police are investigating.
