BRIEF: Boy rescued from icy pond in Downers Grove

Jan. 07--A boy was pulled from an icy pond at 71st and Dexter streets in Downers Grove Tuesday afternoon, fire officials said.

Marsha Giesler, public information officer for the fire department, said the department received a call at 3:40 p.m. from a nearby homeowner.

"It was someone who lives kitty corner who heard him calling for help," she said.

First responders found him trying to float by staying on his back. He was pulled out of the water within five minutes of the call, fire officials said. The boy was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital.

Hospital officials declined to provide his condition, citing privacy laws.
