Jan. 11--A 5-year-old boy was struck by a vehicle in the Austin neighborhood Saturday evening, officials said.
The boy had to be extricated from underneath the vehicle and was hospitalized with minor injuries, according to Chicago fire and police officials.
The incident happened about 6:50 p.m. on the 500 block of North Pine Avenue on the West Side, officials said. The child was taken to Loyola University Medical Center, where his condition stabilized, said Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro.
A 35-year-old man driving the SUV was southbound on Pine Avenue when the boy "ran into the street," Alfaro said.
The driver swerved to avoid the boy, striking a parked vehicle and then the boy.
He was cited for failure to reduce speed, Alfaro said.
According to Angela Jones, a neighbor, an SUV slid on ice and hit the boy, who was under the vehicle for about 20 minutes. The driver and the vehicle remained on the scene, Jones said.
She said that after the boy was extricated, he was conscious and talking.
She said that the boy was visiting relatives on the block.
"When they pulled him out from under the truck he was talking," she said. "These side streets are bad, they need to plow them."
