BRIEF: Boy, 17, fatally shot in Harvey gas station, mother injured

May 31--A 17-year-old boy was fatally shot Saturday afternoon after an altercation between a man and the boy's mother inside a gas station, according to Harvey officials.

At about 4:30 p.m. Harvey police were called to a Mobil station at 147th and Wood streets in the south suburb and found the victims, said Sean Howard, a Harvey spokesman.

According to Howard, the boy's mother had a dispute with a man in the gas station and the man took out a gun and began shooting.

The teen was pronounced dead at the scene while the mother was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where she underwent surgery, Howard said.

The 17-year-old was later identified as Juwan Benson, of the 100 block of West 147th Street in Harvey, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

The gunman fled, and police were reviewing surveillance video.

No other details were immediately available.
