BRIEF: Boy, 16, fatally wounded in West Side shooting

Feb. 03--A 16-year-old boy was killed Wednesday morning in a shooting on the West Side in the city's Austin neighborhood.

Shortly after 8 a.m., the boy was walking in the 5000 block of West Ferdinand Street when he was approached by someone who opened fire, striking him in the face. The gunman then fled on foot, said Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago police spokesman.

The boy was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Estrada said.

According to preliminary reports, police said the boy got into some sort of argument and was shot in the face.

No one was in custody for the attack, and police were investigating.
