BRIEF: Boy, 16, dies after being shot on West Side

Aug. 18--A 16-year-old boy died Monday afternoon after being wounded in a Lawndale shooting that also killed a 19-year-old over the weekend.

Caprice McCollum Jr. of the 1800 block of South Avers Avenue died just after 4 p.m. Monday, according to the Cook County medical examiner.

McCollum was outside with Jerome Phelps in the 1600 block of South Springfield Avenue about 9:45 p.m. Sunday when two people approached and started firing, police said.

Phelps was shot multiple times and taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead later that night.

McCollum was shot in the head and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital.
