BRIEF: Boy, 16, charged with threatening Marist teacher on social media

April 24--A 16-year-old student at Marist High School is facing a felony charge after police say he threatened a teacher over social media.

The boy allegedly posted the threat to a social media site directed at a teacher at Marist, 4200 W. 115th St., on Thursday evening.

School officials said they "immediately reported" the posting to Chicago police, according to a statement on the school's website.

Police said they brought the boy into the 22nd District police station for "processing." The boy was charged with making a cyber threat, a felony, and then released to his parents with a court date, said Officer Ron Gaines, a Chicago Police Department spokesman.

In a statement, Marist officials said the school would operate on its normal schedule Friday but would beef up school security, as well as having a Chicago police presence on campus as a precaution.

School officials said they had also been in communication with the boy's family.

"With student safety being our first priority, Marist takes all threats seriously," the school said in the statement. "We appreciate the support and confidence of our families as we prepare for a regular school day [Friday]."
