BRIEF: Boy, 16, charged in shooting of 7-year-old in Morgan Park

May 24--A 16-year-old boy has been charged in connection with a shooting that wounded a 7-year-old boy as he walked home from school with his brother and sister in the Morgan Park neighborhood on the Far South Side.

The 16-year-old was charged with aggravated battery and discharge of a firearm, according to a statement from the Chicago Police Department, which did not release his name because he is a juvenile.

Elijah Dace was shot in the shoulder about 3:20 p.m. Wednesday in the 1300 block of West 109th Place, about two blocks from his home, according to police.

Elijah had been walking home from Shoop Academy, where he is a first-grader, when two gunmen jumped from a nearby alley. They yelled, "What you be about?" and fired at least six times, police said.

Police have said they do not believe Elijah was the intended target.

Elijah was taken to University of Chicago Medicine Comer Children's Hospital, where he underwent surgery Thursday morning and was listed in good condition, according to the boy's family and police.

The 16-year-old was charged after he was identified as being involved in the shooting, police said.
