Dec. 15--San Bernardino Valley College will remain closed through Tuesday after the campus was the target of a bomb threat, college officials said, dismissing reports of the threat being a "hoax" as erroneous.
About 5:30 p.m. Monday, the community college asked students and employees to leave the campus immediately, according to a statement posted online by Pierre Galvez, the chief of the San Bernardino Community College District Police.
The athletics department at the college said in an online statement that the closure was prompted by a bomb threat.
The investigation into the threat is ongoing, prompting college officials to keep the campus closed Tuesday, said Alisa Moore, a spokeswoman for the community college district.
"The investigation of the threat has not concluded that the threat has been eliminated," Moore said in a statement.
Although a San Bernardino police officer told The Times and other news outlets that the threat to the campus was a hoax, Moore said in an email that the city's police department "is not involved" and "not a credible source" on the incident.
"It is a big deal to close a college campus and conflicting statements" do not help, Moore wrote.
The campus is in the 700 block of South Mount Vernon Avenue. The college serves about 12,000 students each semester.
