BRIEF: Body removed from creek at Geneva Golf Club

Dec. 27--Geneva police and fire officials are investigating after a man's body was found and recovered from a creek at the Geneva Golf Club early Friday afternoon.

Fire Battalion Chief Kevin Forest said fire officials responded with a water rescue team to the South Street golf club after receiving an initial 911 call at 1:25 p.m. Friday.

Forest confirmed a male had been removed from the water and pronounced dead.

John Gaines, 74, was found by Geneva police and fire officials lying face down in the creek by hole 6, appearing to be unresponsive, police said in a news release late Friday. Gaines, the husband of Geneva Chamber of Commerce president Jean Gaines, was pronounced dead about 1:50 p.m.

The golf club is located at 831 South Street.

Geneva Police are investigating and the Kane County Coroner's office is working to determine a cause of death. Police said they do not believe the death is connected to any criminal activity.
