BRIEF: Body parts in suitcase identified as remains of Bay Area man

Feb. 11--Human body parts found in a suitcase and a garbage can in downtown San Francisco last month have been identified as being the remains of a 58-year-old Vallejo man, the coroner announced Wednesday.

But the cause of Omar Shahwan's death has yet to be determined, the county medical examiner said.

San Francisco police said some of the man's extremities still have not been found.

The announcement follows the grisly discovery last month near San Francisco's Financial District. On Jan. 28, police received a report of a suspicious package near 11th Street between Mission and Market streets.

Investigators said they opened a suitcase and found human remains and that a subsequent search of the area turned up additional remains in a garbage can, police said.

Soon after the discovery, police arrested Mark Andrus, 54, in connection with the case. Andrus and Shahwan had been roommates in a single-room occupancy hotel in San Francisco in 2010, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Andrus was eventually released because of a lack of evidence and died days later.
