Dec. 20--A man's body was discovered late Friday afternoon in a two-flat on the block where he lived after a fire at the building on the West Side in the West Garfield Park neighborhood.
Chicago firefighters were called about 4 p.m. to a vacant 2 1/2-story building in the 4400 block of West Congress Parkway, according to the Fire Department's news office.
A body of a male was found in the basement, where the fire broke out, officials said.
The man was later identified as Harvey "Disco" Cobbs, 66, of the block where the fire took place, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. The office does not disclose the exact address of those who die, so it was not immediately possible to verify Cobbs lived in the building where the fire took place.
In 2013, the city of Chicago sued to demolish the building where the fire took place, receiving a court order to allow demolition because the building was severely damaged because of a previous fire, according to court records filed with the Cook County Record of Deeds' office. The property also made a 2013 city list of buildings with pending demolition permits.
Police have opened a death investigation but released few details.
An autopsy on Cobbs' body was scheduled for Sunday, according to the medical examiner's office.
