BRIEF: Blaze injures firefighter, woman on West Side

Aug. 20--A firefighter and a woman were injured in a blaze early Thursday in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side, authorities said.

The fire started around 2:05 a.m. in a three-story home in the 600 block of North Springfield Avenue, said Cmdr. Frank Velez, a spokesman for the Chicago Fire Department.

Firefighters discovered a woman, between 35 and 40, outside the home with minor injuries, Velez said. She was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital for treatment.

A firefighter suffered a knee injury while battling the blaze and was also taken to Mount Sinai, Velez said.

The fire was struck out at 2:59 a.m., Velez said.

Fire officials believe the blaze may have started on the second-floor porches of the building, Velez said. The cause of the fire was under investigation.
