The Hurricanes continued sustaining their zone pressure throughout the period and got their second goal when Riley Nash redirected a shot that appeared to go in off Niklas Hjalamrsson a13:05.
They weren't done.
Former Hawk Kris Versteeg set up John-Michael Liles on a breakaway for the third goal and a commanding 3-0 lead. The Hawks, meanwhile, could muster just five shots on goal.
