Blackhawks trade Ryan Garbutt to Ducks for Jiri Sekac

Jan. 21--Despite winning 12 consecutive games, the Blackhawks made a move Thursday, trading winger Ryan Garbutt to the Anaheim Ducks for winger Jiri Sekac.

Sekac has one goal and two assists in 22 games this season.

Sekac played in the KHL prior to signing with the Canadiens before last season. The Canadiens traded him to the Ducks in Feb. 2015 and had nine goals in 69 games between the Ducks and Canadiens last season.

Sekac had one goal and two assists in 22 games. Garbutt, meanwhile, had two goals and four assists in 43 games with the Hawks.

With the trade, the Hawks have now parted with the two players they received in the trade that sent Patrick Sharp to the Stars. The Hawks traded defenseman Trevor Daley to the Penguins for Rob Scuderi in December.

With the move, the Hawks gain some maneuverability with the salary cap this season and potentially next. Sekac has one-year remaining on a two-way contract that pays him $925,000.

Garbutt's deal ran through 2017 and the Hawks were on the hook for $900,000 of his $1.8 million salary. The Stars are paying the remainder of the salary per conditions of their trade with the Hawks. Garbutt's contract is a one-way deal, which means his salary counts against the cap even if he were to be sent to the minor leagues.
