BRIEF: Blackhawks sign Trevor van Riemsdyk to 2-year extension

July 07--The Chicago Blackhawks provided some stability to their back end when they signed defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk to a two-year contract extension Tuesday.

The one-way deal, which will run through the end of the 2017-18 season, will carry a salary-cap hit of $825,000 per season, according to van Riemsdyk's agent, Alec Schall.

The 23-year-old van Riemsdyk had a roller-coaster season after making the Hawks roster out of training camp. He had an assist in 18 games before suffering a left patella fracture after taking a shot off his left knee from the Dallas Stars' Trevor Daley during a Nov. 16 game.

During his rehabilitation while playing with Rockford of the AHL, van Riemsdyk suffered a right wrist injury and had surgery to repair that April 7. He returned in time to play in four Stanley Cup Final games against the Tampa Bay Lightning and help the Hawks to their third title in six seasons.
