BRIEF: Blackhawks lead Avalanche 6-2 after second period

Jan. 11--It seems as if the Blackhawks have solved the riddle of Semyon Varlamov.

The Hawks chased Varlamov from the game and lead the Avalanche 6-2 after two periods. The Hawks had an offensive explosion with four goals in the period.

In the first period, Mashinter got the puck rolling by scoring quickly after a faceoof at 8 minutes, 27 seconds of the period. Mashinter, playing in just his second game since Dec. 22, scored his second-career goal.

Bryan Bickell is a healthy scratch for the Hawks on Sunday.

Then Patrick Kane put the Hawks up 2-0. After sustained zone time for the Hawks' second line, Kane fired a shot from the high slot that got by Varlamov thanks in part to a screen from Artem Anisimov. It was Kane's 24th goal of the season and first goal of 2016.

Kane would add his second goal on a Hawks power play in the second period, the goal that chased Varlamov from the game.

Marian Hossa snapped his 14-game goal drought with two goals in the period.
