BRIEF: Blackhawks, Blues to play in 2017 Winter Classic at Busch Stadium

March 10--Teams from Chicago and St. Louis will renew a long-standing rivalry at Busch Stadium -- except this time it will be in hockey.

The Blackhawks and Blues will play in the 2017 Winter Classic at Busch Stadium on Jan. 2, the NHL announced Wednesday before the teams squared off indoors at the Scottrade Center.

"It's an honor to be selected as a participant," Hawks President John McDonough said in a statement. "Playing at iconic Busch Stadium is sure to add to the mystique of this intense rivalry."

It marks the fifth time the Hawks will play in an outdoor game since 2009. Two of those came in Chicago -- at Wrigley Field in 2009 and Soldier Field in 2014 -- while the Blues will be playing in their first.

The NHL also is interested in having an outdoor game at Notre Dame Stadium that presumably would involve the Hawks as well. Notre Dame is open to having the game after a construction project is completed around Notre Dame Stadium in the summer of 2017.
