BRIEF: Bird causes 5-second power outage, longer headaches at LAX

Feb. 13--Passengers experienced a baggage delay Friday morning at Los Angeles International Airport after a bird flew into an overhead power line and caused an outage.

An employee reportedly took video of the bird strike, which caused only a five-second power outage but a much longer headache for airport workers and passengers.

The outage occurred just before 7 a.m., said Michelle Figueroa, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.

It affected the airport's large equipment, including the baggage carousels. Airport employees and utility crews had to reset each baggage carousel manually, which resulted in longer delays at some terminals, airport spokeswoman Amanda Parsons said.

Crews had successfully reset all baggage carousels by 10 a.m.
