BRIEF: Bill Murray won't face charges for throwing phones: police

Feb. 12--Bill Murray is not facing charges for throwing three phones at a California rooftop bar Thursday, Carmel-by-the-Sea Police Commander Paul Tomasi said Friday.

Police were called to the Vesuvio restaurant at about 10:30 p.m. Pacific Time after three patrons reported Murray took their phones and threw them. Two of the phones were thrown from the rooftop to the sidewalk, damaging them, while the third phone did not sustain damage, Tomasi said.

Murray, who grew up in Wilmette, was not at the bar when police arrived but Murray later said he would replace the two damaged phones, Tomasi said. The bargoers did not want to press charges. A Vesuvio representative did not return a Tribune request for comment.

It's unclear what caused Murray to throw the phones. TMZ reported that the patrons tried to take Murray's picture but Tomasi said the patrons told police they weren't taking photos or video of Murray.

Murray, 65, is in the area for the Pebble Beach Pro-Am golf tournament, which runs through Sunday.
