BRIEF: Bill Flynn, former Brother Rice football coach, dies at 87

Nov. 05--Bill Flynn, who coached Brother Rice football from 1963-1966, died Monday in Pottsville, Penn. He was 87.

The Pottsville Republican Herald first reported the story.

Flynn was born in Gary, Ind., and played college football at Notre Dame, winning a national championship in 1949. He coached the Pottsville Crimson Tide from 1958-1962, then left for a shot to lead the Crusaders in the always tough Chicago Catholic League.

He was 25-11-2 in four years as the Brother Rice coach. The Crusaders won their first Catholic League title in Flynn's final season with the team.

Flynn returned to Pottsville in 1967 and coached there until 1983. He was 218-81-6 in his 32-year coaching career at five schools.

The Republican Herald reported that Flynn had cancer.
