BRIEF: Big rig hits pedestrian; fatal crash snarls East L.A. commute

Feb. 23--A big rig fatally struck a pedestrian early Monday morning on the northbound 5 Freeway, snarling traffic at the East L.A. interchange.

The collision took place near South Soto Street where the 110, 10, and 60 freeways all crisscross. As a result, a two-lane transition road was down to one lane at about 4:30 a.m., the California Highway Patrol said.

The entire road was briefly shut down before one lane was reopened. Still, the bottleneck backed up commuters driving through the interchange.

"It's pretty bad," said Officer Tony Polizzi.

A SigAlert was issued before 5:30 a.m. As of 7 a.m., delays are beginning at Boyle Heights and extending north to Norwalk.
