BRIEF: Impaired Divvy bicyclist hit by 2 cars on Lake Shore Drive

Nov. 23--A highly intoxicated man riding a Divvy bike was struck by two cars and critically injured early Saturday morning on Lake Shore Drive, police said.

It happened at 2:50 a.m. as the 24-year-old bicyclist was riding northbound on Lake Shore Drive near Belmont in the city's Lake View East neighborhood, police said.

A 27-year-old man driving northbound in a Mitsubishi sedan told police the Divvy bicyclist was "swerving'' when his car accidentally collided with the biker, who was thrown under the Mitsubishi, police said.

When a driver of another northbound car, a 2011 Nissan sedan, stopped in a right lane to assist, a Honda Civic behind the Nissan tried to avoid them, swerved and slammed into the Nissan, then hit the bicyclist and the Mitsubishi, police said.

Alcohol was a "major factor" affecting the bicyclist, police said.

The 22-year-old driver of the Honda Civic was cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle, police said. No other charges or citations were filed, police said.

The bicyclist was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition, police said. There was no condition update Saturday evening.
