BRIEF: Bensenville man charged with sexually assaulting relative

Jan. 01--A Bensenville man remained in jail Friday after he was charged with sexually assaulting a mentally handicapped relative, DuPage County authorities said.

John A. Cegielski, 76, appeared in bond court Thursday, where Judge Richard Russo set bail at $350,000, prosecutors said, on a charge of sexual assault.

Police say that Cegielski assaulted the 60-year-old male relative Tuesday in the basement of a house on Marshall Road the men shared with other relatives.

According to police, one of the residents requires the assistance of an in-home nurse, who allegedly witnessed Cegielski committing the assault in the home's basement. The nurse immediately contacted police, who arrested Cegielski later that day, prosecutors said.

"It is alleged that this defendant, a trusted family member, committed this horrific act just to satisfy his own sick sexual desires," State's Attorney Robert Berlin said. "What I find particularly disturbing in this case is that the victim, who is severely handicapped, was unable to fend off the alleged assault."

Cegielski's next court date is set for Jan. 11 in front of Judge Liam Brennan.
