BRIEF: Belgian cyclist Antoine Demoitie dies from race injuries

March 28--Belgian cyclist Antoine Demoitie died Monday after succumbing to injuries he suffered during a race in northern France this past weekend.

Demoitie, who died at a hospital where he had been in intensive care, had been competing in the Gent-Wevelgem one-day event, a Belgian race that briefly crossed into France. The 25-year-old reportedly tangled with other riders and fell to the ground where he was struck by an official race motorcycle.

"Antoine will be truly missed," Brian Cookson, president of the international cycling federation, said in a statement.

The federation said it will cooperate with authorities to investigate the circumstances of the incident.
