BRIEF: Bears sign defensive lineman David Carter, waive linebacker Jonathan Brown

July 28--The Bears signed defensive lineman David Carter to a one-year contract on the eve of training camp Tuesday and waived linebacker Jonathan Brown.

Carter last played in the regular season for the Cowboys in 2013. The Jaguars cut him after the 2014 preseason. The league lists Carter at 6-foot-5, 300 pounds, which would make him a candidate for any of the three defensive line spots in the Bears' new 3-4 base front.

He has appeared in 35 career games, 32 of which were with the Cardinals from 2011-12. He entered the league as Arizona's sixth-round pick in 2011.

Brown played his college ball at Illinois and entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Cardinals in 2014.

The Bears also announced the signing of return man A.J. Cruz, whose agent tweeted the news on Monday. Cruz's contract is for three years, the Bears said.

The Bears roster is at the maximum of 90 players as they set to report to camp in Bourbonnais on Wednesday.
