BRIEF: Bears assignment: Vikings DE Everson Griffen

Dec. 19--The assignment: Slowing Vikings defensive end Everson Griffen

Griffen's measurables: 6-foot-3, 273 pounds

Assigned: Bears left tackle Charles Leno

Notable numbers: Griffen leads the Vikings and ranks 10th in the NFL with 8 1/2 sacks. Leno and the Bears held Griffen without a sack in Week 8.

Scouting report: It's no secret Griffen's go-to weapon is a spin move that he'll turn loose with great explosion. The sixth-year end has upper-level athleticism and, according to Bears coach John Fox, is an ideal fit within the Vikings defense, an every-down player who understands how to work with the pieces around him. Leno will have to remain aware of Griffen's strong hands and impressive body control. Griffen can be a menace as a speed rusher but is also adept with his power moves.

Word from within: "He has an explosive get-off and a variety of moves. You can tell he loves that spin move. And he's so good with the timing of it. He knows when to get up there and he knows when he can chop that arm and throw that violent elbow around to get around you. I just have to be patient -- know that move can come at any moment, but have good tight feet and be ready to move side to side." -- Leno
