BRIEF: Batting 9th no demotion for Arismendy Alcantara, Tommy La Stella

March 29--MESA, Ariz. -- With 5 1/2 weeks of spring training completed, Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon thought Saturday was a good time to move slugger Anthony Rizzo to the leadoff spot.

"It freshes them up a bit," Maddon said of the change. "It's always exciting to see it happen. The fans dig it. so let's give it a roll."

Maddon didn't think that anyone should feel slighted by the move.

"That's the kind of gimmick I do like to use," Maddon said. "Anything that alters anyone's mindset. Which is needed in a moment, is good."

Maddon also went as far to talk to infielders Arismendy Alcantara and Tommy La Stella about the possibility of batting ninth -- one spot behind the pitcher.

"This is not a slight on their hitting whatsoever," Maddon said. "Actually, for me you're going to get better pitches hitting in that spot.

"I'm doing it because I think they're good."

Maddon's reasoning is that Alcantara and La Stella could serve as second leadoff batters and set the table for the No. 2 hitter if Jorge Soler or another slugger is moved up to that spot.

It also could give the Cubs plenty of evaluation for their next leadoff batter if Dexter Fowler leaves after this season as a free agent.
