BRIEF: Batavia investigating suspicious fire

Nov. 08--The Batavia Fire Department is looking for information regarding a suspicious field fire set Wednesday night behind Sam's Club, authorities said.

The fire was set around 10 p.m. in the 500 block of North Randall Road. Investigators believe the fire was intentionally set, fire department officials said in a news release.

While the fire didn't cause any monetary damages, it tied up Batavia's firefighters as well as personnel and resources from Elburn and Geneva for an extended period of time. Had the fire not been caught in time, it is likely it would have spread to surrounding businesses, department officials said.

The department asks anyone with information of suspicious activity or people in the area at the time contact Deputy Chief Randy Banker at 630-454-2100.
