Nov. 11--A "despondent" man who had refused to leave a Batavia home was taken into custody Tuesday night without incident, police said.
According to a news release from Batavia police, the nine-hour incident ended after police decided to enter the residence about 8:30 p.m. to "check the well being of the despondent subject."
The incident began about 11:45 a.m. when police were dispatched to the home in the 800 block of Roberts Lane after learning of a person "who was reportedly threatening to harm himself," according to the release. Police could not get the man to leave the home.
With the help of the Kane County Regional SWAT team, the area around the home was secured based on information that the man had access to a number of firearms, police said.
Batavia High and Gustafson Elementary schools were on a "soft lockdown" as police dealt with the situation. Both schools are a few blocks from that stretch of Roberts.
Voice and telephone contact between police and the subject was initiated but broke off about 2:30 p.m., police said. The decision to enter the home was made after communication could not be re-established.
The man was transported to a hospital after being taken into custody. No criminal charges are pending, but an investigation of the incident is ongoing, according to the release.
