July 25--A website that seeks to help consumers find a financial planner published its quarterly list of certified financial planners who have declared bankruptcy on Friday.
The Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards makes public the names of certified financial planners who have declared bankruptcy within the last five years. Under rules that took effect in July 2012, the individuals might not be subject to any discipline but will have their bankruptcy disclosed.
The disclosures are available on cfp.net. From the home page, click on "find a CFP Pro" and then "verify an individual's certification status and disciplinary history." Searches can be performed by name and state. The disclosures will stay on the website for 10 years.
The Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards grants CFP certification to professionals. It verifies the bankruptcy and notes the bankruptcy on the professional's public profile, which is available on the website.
Nationwide, there are 72,000 certified financial planners.
