BRIEF: Balmy weather to extend to MLK day, temps to stay above average for week

Jan. 19--The Chicago area's balmy weekend temperatures should continue for the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, with high temps at or above average expected for the rest of the week.

The high temperature at O'Hare International Airport hit 40 degrees Sunday, 9 degrees above the average temperature of 31 for Jan. 18, according to the National Weather Service.

For Monday and the rest of the week, "We're generally looking at pretty mild conditions," said Gino Izzi, a meteorologist with the weather service's Romeoville office.

Lows Sunday night should dip into the low 20s in outlying suburbs and the mid-20s near Lake Michigan, according to the weather service.

On Monday, the King holiday should be partly sunny, with highs again around 40 and winds of about 5 mph which are expected to shift from the west to the south during the afternoon.

Tuesday will start out sunny, with highs in the upper 30s, but the sky is expected to cloud over, with a chance of snow far north.

Highs through the week are expected to remain at or above the normal high temperature of 31 degrees, Izzi said.
