BRIEF: Baby injured in police pursuit that ends in three-car crash on 5 freeway

Feb. 17--A police pursuit of a stolen car in North Hills ended in a three-car crash that briefly closed the southbound 5 Freeway in Arleta on Wednesday morning, officials said.

The chase started when an LAPD officer near Nordhoff Street and Sepulveda Boulevard got a Lojack "hit" on a stolen car and the vehicle sped off, Officer Tony Im said.

The vehicle drove onto the northbound 405 Freeway, then traveled east on the 118 before heading south on the 5, police said. It struck three cars as it approached Osborne Street, Im said. The driver bailed out and tried to run, but was caught.

A baby who was in one of the cars that was struck suffered a cut on its chin from the crash, police said. The baby and its mother were taken to a hospital.

The driver of the stolen vehicle, whose identity was not immediately available, was taken into custody, Im said.

The southbound lanes on the 5 were closed until just before noon, the California Highway Patrol said.
