Nov. 29--Four Schaumburg families were displaced from their homes Friday because of an early morning fire, while on a separate call, firefighters helped a woman who had just given birth in an apartment stairwell.
Four units of a multifamily apartment complex in the 1400 block of Albany Court caught fire about 7:50 a.m., Schaumburg police Lt. Shawn Green said.
He said the cause of the fire is under investigation. While some initial reports suggested that victims had been rescued from a second floor, Green said all the residents were able to evacuate the building on their own, with no injuries reported.
Representatives with the American Red Cross were on the scene Friday, helping those displaced by the fire with finding shelter.
A few miles away, the Schaumburg Fire Department was called to help a woman who had just given birth in a stairwell of an apartment complex at 21 Kristin Drive, Green said.
"Mother and baby are both doing fine," Green said, adding that paramedics from Elk Grove Village and Hoffman Estates assisted with the transport of the mother and baby, who were taken to St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates.
