June 25--Azusa police shot a man late Wednesday night who allegedly attacked officers with a rake and then a shovel, authorities said.
It was the second police shooting of a suspect in the city this week.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, which is aiding Azusa police in its investigation, said two officers were patrolling the 5400 block of North Conwell Avenue about 11:20 p.m. Wednesday when they saw a man on the sidewalk run away from them.
The officers chased him down to a driveway, where the man allegedly threw a rake at police. After the rake, the man picked up a shovel and started swinging it, the Sheriff's Department said in a news release.
Police used a Taser on the man but it didn't work. The man hit one officer in the chest with the shovel before he was shot, officials said. He was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive.
A relative of the man identified him to ABC7 as Jose Juarez, 45. He told the station Juarez had gotten into a confrontation with police a few weeks before over drinking in public.
On Sunday, officers shot and killed a man in a confrontation in Azusa about 1 p.m. in the 500 block of East Lee Drive.
