BRIEF: Autopsy: Man shot in June dies of his injuries

Oct. 21--A 28-year-old man who had become paralyzed after being shot in the North Austin neighborhood in June has died from his injuries, officials said Tuesday.

Derrick Smith, of the first block of North Waller Avenue, was pronounced dead Monday, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office and police.

Police opened up a death investigation after Smith was taken to West Suburban Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 5:15 p.m. Monday, said Officer Thomas Sweeney, a Chicago police spokesman.

According to an autopsy conducted Tuesday, Smith died of pulmonary thromboembolism immobility due to paraplegia caused by multiple gunshot wounds. The man's death was ruled a homicide, according to the medical examiner's office.

Smith was shot at 10 p.m. June 21 on the 5200 block of West LeMoyne Street, Sweeney said. Smith was in a vehicle at that location when a gunman walked up and began firing a gun at him, Sweeney said.

After the shooting, Smith managed to get to the 1500 block of North Lotus Avenue, where he was taken to Loyola University Medical Center with multiple gunshot wounds, Sweeney said.
