BRIEF: Aurora police to collect unused prescription medicine

April 26--The Aurora Police Department will be joining law enforcement agencies nationwide as they partner with the Drug Enforcement Administration in collecting expired, unused, and unwanted prescription medications Saturday.

Between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., these medications will be accepted at the front desk of the department's headquarters, 1200 E. Indian Trail, with no questions asked. The drugs will then be safely disposed of, police department officials said. The service is free and anonymous. Liquids, needles or sharps will not be accepted.

Last September, Americans turned in 350 tons of prescription drugs at more than 5,000 sites operated by the Drug Enforcement Administration and more than 3,800 of its state and local law enforcement partners including the Aurora police.

Aurora police officials said the initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that remain in home cabinets are susceptible to misuse and abuse, they said.
