BRIEF: Animal control caring for puppies found after fire

Feb. 16--The owner of 15 dogs and a cat wants her pets back after Chicago Animal Care and Control recovered them from a small house fire in the Back of the Yards neighborhood Monday afternoon.

Firefighters were called to the 2 1/2-story frame home in the 4300 block of South Hermitage Avenue about 1:25 p.m. Monday, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

Animal control medical staff evaluated the animals and found that none were injured in the fire, said Ivan Capifali, the department's acting executive director. He said animal control will temporarily house the animals until the owner finds housing for them.

Fire crews were initially told someone may have not been accounted for, but that turned out not to be true, according to Chief Juan Hernandez, a spokesman for the Chicago Fire Department.
