Dec. 17--The Angels signed Daniel Nava to a one-year, $1.375-million contract on Wednesday, giving them a veteran corner outfielder who can come off the bench or a possible left-field platoon partner with Craig Gentry.
The switch-hitting Nava, who turns 33 in February, has a career .281 average and .377 on-base percentage from the left side in parts of five seasons with the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays. He can also play first base.
Nava split the 2015 season between Boston, Tampa Bay and the triple-A affiliates for both clubs, batting .194 with a .315 OBP in 60 big-league games. His best year came in 2013, when he hit .303 with a .385 OBP, 12 homers and 66 runs batted in for the Red Sox.
Nava is a Redwood City, Calif., native who was not drafted out of Santa Clara University. He spent time playing for the independent-league Chico Outlaws before signing with the Red Sox in January of 2008.
