BRIEF: Angels' C.J. Wilson put on disabled list because of elbow inflammation

July 31--The Angels placed left-hander C.J. Wilson on the 15-day disabled list Friday because of elbow inflammation, a move that will open up a rotation spot for veteran right-hander Jered Weaver.

Drew Rucinski was recalled from triple-A Salt Lake, and the right-hander and will probably start in place of Wilson against the Dodgers on Sunday. Weaver, who made a rehabilitation start for Class A Inland Empire on Thursday night, is expected to be slotted into the rotation next week.

Weaver has been out since June 21 because of left hip inflammation, but the Angels have not rushed his return because their five starters have been pitching so well, and there was no obvious spot for Weaver to take.

Wilson, who is 8-8 with a 3.89 earned-run average in 21 starts, had fluid drained from the elbow earlier this season and had one of his worst starts of the year in Houston on Tuesday night, allowing six runs and six hits, including two homers, in a 10-5 loss to the Astros.

In another move, first baseman/outfielder Efren Navarro, who was designated for assignment on Wednesday, was optioned to Salt Lake.
