Jan. 08--An Amtrak train bound for New York and Boston on Wednesday night was delayed in Chicago for more than 12 hours by cold-weather mechanical problems.
The train was to depart Union Station about 9:30 p.m. with 172 passengers -- 144 heading to New York and the rest to Boston -- but didn't move out of Union Station until 7:55 a.m., agency spokesman Marc Magliari said.
The train made it as far south as the South Branch of the Chicago River before having to turn around. The company that owns property from about there to Cleveland thought it best that the train gets a crew that is more well rested, Magliari said.
The train is scheduled to depart again at 10 a.m. Magliari said the agency has been giving customers refunds throughout the night so it's not yet clear how many of the original passengers will be on this trip.
