BRIEF: Amnesty International: Chicago should probe police site cited by Guardian

Feb. 26--Amnesty International USA urged Mayor Rahm Emanuel to investigate allegations of wrongdoing by Chicago police in a West Side facility that were raised by The Guardian, a British newspaper.

A news release issued by Amnesty International called on Emanuel to allow "full, unrestricted access" to the Homan Square facility, where the Police Department houses gang and other specialized units.

The Guardian article, the latest in a series on the Police Department, likened the location to a CIA "black site" facility and alleged that officers there conducted "off-the books" interrogations and barred access to lawyers. Chicago police denied any wrongdoing at the facility.

Amanda Simon, Amnesty International's media contact listed on the news release, confirmed to the Tribune that she is married to Spencer Ackerman, the author of the Guardian series.
